I took my family down for a lunch on Monday at the Carpenters arms. My mum (highly fussy) was dubious at first, saying she remembered it as a bit of a dingy place. She soon shut up as we walked in, its just lovely and light inside, but retains its cosy charm. I had booked ahead (you can do so on Messenger on Facebook) and we were quickly seated. It was busy for a Monday lunch, but testimony to the delicious food they serve.
All four of us ordered a main course, from rack of ribs to pasta. Everyone declared it as absolutely delicious. I had the freshest tasting lamb tagine ever. Delicious flavours, probably the best thing I'd eaten in ages at a pub! Refreshing it's not a chain, the menu had a great variety from pasta, to pie, to fish.
In February dessert is free with a booking of four or more people! What a bargain! Of course if it's free it's crazy not to eat it!! Again, it came up beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. My fussy mum was thoroughly converted and already talking about when to take my dad!
Went for dinner on a cold and very wet February night. Really warm greeting from the two front of house (Mel and Kiera). They were everything a restaurant needs to make people welcome.
We had a meat platter to share, which has some lovely meats. I had the lamb cutlets, which were luscious. Beautifully seared on the outside. Himself had fillet steak, which had a beautiful taste (or so he tells me, he certainly wasn't giving me any of it). We ordered some extra vegetables, the portions were huge, certainly each was enough for 3 or 4 people.
I would certainly go again. My only regret? That it isn't closer to where we live so we could walk here.
I literally couldn't think of a fault if I tried. Every sing le member of staff is inviting, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I am vegan and the chef is very accommodating and is happy to take any vegetarian main and turn it into an exciting vegan dish. If you let them know dietary requirements when you book they have even more time to prepare vegan options. It is clear that they love and take pride in what they do and want to make the best food.
The staff always make sure you are happy too. Over all a warm welcoming place with lovely staff and great food at a reasonable price. I definitely recommend.
This was the second time we have met here. The food is delicious. I'm gluten free and the chef said I could more or less order anything on the menu and he would adapt it. The waitresses were lovely, even when we accidentally knocked over a glass of wine(!) they cheerfully mopped us all up. We're about to book again. Can't fault it.
What a fantastic afternoon we had here. There were 21 of us, we were sat at the bottom end of the restaurant which was perfect. The food was excellent and the service we received was first class. Special thank yous to Tash, Allison K & Alison B for serving us and making us so welcome.
Will definitely be returning for our annual get together New Year Day in 2020 ..... (that is if you guys will have us).
We wanted to take my rather frail 95 year old aunt out for a lunchtime treat while we were visiting her and booked, last minute, a table here.
I have to say that all of the staff were so nice and kind to my elderly aunt, for which we were really grateful, and especiall) our waitress Caitlin, who sorted out for her a children's portion of egg and chips, which was just about the right size for her to leave room for some dessert. My wife had liver and bacon and I had lamb tagine, and both were of excellent quality (and also quite big portions!)
We shall look forward to our next visit to Aunty, if we can take her here again!
Visited with my family Tuesday evening. Food was amazing with so much flavour. The starter boards were great, you can tell everything is made fresh daily and nothing is microwaved or frozen! The cheese cake was out of this world, so creamy and the digestive base was crunchy and full of flavour! Oscar, Stet and Jem made us feel very welcome!!
Ate here with the family tonight and had to leave a review. We had a lovely warm welcome from the bar staff. We were served our drinks immediately and shown to a table which we had reserved earlier in the day.
We had three different bread boards between the party and all were loaded with fresh breads with a selection of meats, camembert and dips. All delicious and well presented. Rest of the food was delicious. Nice vegetarian options too! Had the banoffee pie for dessert. One of the nicest things I've ever eaten.
Our server, Stef was very attentive and chatty. Nothing ever too much. Glasses never en1pty. Lovely guy!
Well done team. Will return soon!
Our first time here and have to say what a lovely place to eat, Allison our waitress was so lovely and helpful as well as all the other staff members. We will be back for more visits, our now no:1 place to eat in Essex.
We had a lovely evening with a three course meal and drinks. The pub is nicely fitted out with a mixture of traditional and modern decor. The service, from Dylan, was top notch. He couldn't be faulted he was attentive, courteous and efficient. The food was very nice and sensible sized portions. The food was good value for money and the evening was very pleasant all round.
